Nursing Avery, a 25-year-year old AGPCNP student, is working with Mrs. Greer, a 91-year-old resident at a long-term care facility. Avery is evaluating Mrs. Greer for frailty. Mrs. Greer has a PMH of diabetes, arthritis, HTN, an MI, and hypothyroidism. Through physical assessment and reading her history, Avery finds that Mrs. Greer’s spouse of nearly seven decades died within the past year. She does not have any children or family support, though she has some friends at the facility. Since her husband’s death, she has experienced increasing fatigue. She lost 14 pounds and had a gastrostomy tube insertion for nutrition. She experienced a decline in physical activity and now requires a wheelchair for mobility (previously ambulated without assistance). Mrs. Greer has withdrawn verbally to the point that it is not possible to assess cognitive function. Please respond to the questions below in your initial post:
1. Explain why frailty is considered a syndrome.
2. Describe risk factors for frailty. Explain if any of these risk factors are modifiable.
3. Describe interventions, including complementary and alternative, the team could consider to address Mrs. Greer’s frailty.
